PONTIAC OFFICER HONORED BY ILLINOIS SENATE
Resolution to Create Officer Casey J. Kohlmeier Memorial Highway

On Wednesday, February 26, 2014, a Resolution (SJR46) sponsored by Senator Jason Barickman (R-53rd District) was read and voted on by the Illinois Senate honoring Pontiac Officer Casey Kohlmeier, who was killed in the line of duty with his K-9 partner Draco last Fall.

The Resolution pays honor to Officer Kohlmeier’s public service and designates a section of Interstate 55 between Exit 197 and 202 as the Officer Casey J. Kohlmeier Memorial Highway.  The Police Benevolent and Protective Association of Illinois (PBPA), Officer Kohlmeier’s union, worked closely with Senator Barickman to develop this memorial resolution.

“This memorial Resolution serves as an important tribute to Officer Kohlmeier to recognize his exemplary record of public service and dedication,” stated Sean Smoot, Director and Chief Legal Counsel for the PBPA.  “It was humbling to witness the moment of silence in the Senate Chamber and watch the Resolution pass.  I am proud to have worked with Senator Barickman on this resolution to honor Officer Kohlmeier and Draco.  It is critical that we acknowledge the extreme risks that those in law enforcement face every day on the job in an effort to keep our communities safe.  Officer Kohlmeier was taken from his family and community much too soon, but his contributions and leadership will endure, in part, through this public recognition.”

The parents of Officer Kohlmeier were in attendance to receive the Resolution as well as his family, officers from the Pontiac Police Department, and representatives from the PBPA.  The Resolution was adopted by the Illinois Senate (57-000-000) and was sent to the Illinois House.  The Chief House Sponsor is Representative Josh Harms (R-106th District).

Officer Kohlmeier and his K-9 partner Draco were killed on I-55 while on duty when their squad car was struck by a drunk driver.
